Palacio Municipal, Government building in Centro district, Montevideo, Uruguay

The Palacio Municipal is a 26-story administrative building that rises prominently on 18 de Julio Avenue in central Montevideo. Its structure combines government offices with public spaces and cultural facilities distributed throughout the structure.

Construction started in 1935 under architect Mauricio Cravotto and finished in 1941 on what had been a historic cemetery site. The building became a new administrative center that shaped the city's downtown development.

The building houses an art museum and photography center that draw people interested in visual culture. These institutions serve as gathering places where locals engage with contemporary and historical works.

The building is easy to navigate with multiple elevators, including an external lift that provides direct access to upper floors with viewing areas. Visitors should allow time to explore both the public spaces and cultural venues housed within.

The esplanade in front serves as a gathering spot during football matches, with large screens broadcasting national games to crowds. On these occasions, the space becomes a focal point where the city comes together to share the passion for the sport.
