Mercado de la Abundancia, Market and architectural monument in central Montevideo, Uruguay

Mercado de la Abundancia is a marketplace with metal structures and cast iron pillars located in central Montevideo. The design creates spacious interior areas where vendors display goods and visitors can move around easily.

The building started as Mercado del Este in 1859 and received its current structure in 1909 following major renovations by architect Leopoldo Peluffo. This transformation made it an important landmark of early 1900s Montevideo architecture.

The lower level showcases handmade goods and reflects how local craftsmanship has evolved in Montevideo over time. You can see artisans displaying their work, representing the neighborhood's connection to traditional trades.

The site is located on San Jose street and is open on weekdays and Saturdays, with varying hours depending on the day. The large interior space makes it easy to walk around and explore the different vendor areas.

The building draws inspiration from Paris's Les Halles market while incorporating classical decorative details from the early 1900s. This blend of outside influence and local design makes it stand out.
