Mercado de la Abundancia, Market and architectural monument in central Montevideo, Uruguay
The market building features metal structures with cast iron pillars that create large interior spaces for vendors and visitors to move freely.
Originally established as Mercado del Este in 1859, the current structure opened in 1909 following extensive renovations by architect Leopoldo Peluffo.
The lower floor now functions as an exhibition space for handmade crafts, representing the evolution of local commercial traditions in Uruguay.
Located at San Jose 1312, the market welcomes visitors Monday through Friday from 11 AM to 6 PM and Saturdays from 11:30 AM to 3 PM.
The building design draws inspiration from the Parisian Mercado de les Halles while incorporating classical decorative elements from the early 1900s.
