La Pilarica, Historic building in Las Piedras, Uruguay

La Pilarica is an eighteenth-century building in Las Piedras situated on elevated ground with broad views across the landscape. A watchtower added in 1924 defines its appearance, displaying traditional colonial architectural features throughout.

The building served as a key observation point during the Battle of Las Piedras in 1811, a decisive moment in Uruguay's struggle for independence. This battle marked a turning point in the fight for national freedom.

The building functions as a meeting place for local artists and musicians who rehearse theatrical performances and folk dances within its walls. Exhibitions displayed here tell stories about regional heritage and the people who lived through its past.

The site sits on elevated ground, so sturdy footwear is advisable when visiting. The interior spaces are straightforward to navigate with clear signage that helps you find your way around.

The name comes from Pilar Cabrera, a merchant who purchased the property in 1924 and added the distinctive tower as a tribute to the Virgin of Pilar. This personal connection between the former owner and religious tradition shaped the character of the place.
