National Pantheon of the Heroes, Memorial and church building in downtown Asunción, Paraguay
The white neoclassical structure between Palma and Chile streets contains a mausoleum with remains of presidents and military leaders. Three naves form the interior with side altars and a central dome. Corinthian columns frame the facade while a bronze door marks the entrance to the memorial area where commemorative plaques and military emblems adorn the walls throughout.
Construction began in 1864 under President Francisco Solano López as a chapel but remained unfinished for 70 years because of the Triple Alliance War. Architect Alejandro Ravizza designed it following European models. Completion occurred in 1936 through architect Tomás Romero Pereira who preserved the original design and transformed it into a national memorial that later received significant historical figures.
The Latin inscription 'Fides et Patria' at the entrance reflects the connection between religious faith and national identity in Paraguay. This memorial serves as a central location for state ceremonies and honors the memory of fallen defenders of the nation. Annual commemorations attract numerous citizens who pay respect to the country's founders and military leaders while expressing their patriotic connection.
Multiple guard changes occur daily and offer visitors ceremonial displays. The location serves as the starting point for calculating distances on several major national routes. The building sits centrally and can be reached on foot from various hotels and restaurants in the area. Public transportation serves nearby stops regularly, facilitating access for those arriving from different parts of the city.
The memorial houses plaques from international rulers and commemorates the child martyrs of Acosta Ñu alongside two Unknown Soldiers. An eternal flame burns in memory of fallen defenders. The building also contains personal belongings of military leaders including uniforms and swords from various historical periods that document the military tradition of the country throughout its development.
