Spanish explorer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca first encountered the falls in 1541, leading to European documentation of this natural formation.
UNESCO designated both the Brazilian and Argentine national parks containing the falls as World Heritage Sites in 1984 and 1986.
Two international airports serve visitors: Foz do Iguaçu International Airport in Brazil and Cataratas del Iguazú International Airport in Argentina.
During rainy seasons, the water flow increases tenfold to 11,300 cubic meters per second, making it temporarily the world's third-largest waterfall by volume.
