São Mateus do Sul

São Mateus do Sul is a municipality in southern Paraná sitting at 789 meters elevation, with native forests covering the landscape. The Iguaçu River forms a natural boundary that shapes the area's geography.

The settlement began in 1769 when a military officer arrived with 25 men conducting expeditions from São Paulo territory. This early military presence shaped the town's founding.

The Tradycje Polskie festival in August displays the town's Polish roots through parades, folk dances, and traditional foods that visitors can experience firsthand.

As an administrative center, the town offers various public services and local information for visitors. The best time to explore is outside the rainy season when roads are in better condition.

The region preserves roughly half of its native forest cover while supporting yerba mate cultivation and shale mining. This balance between conservation and economic activity defines the area.
