Sede da Fazenda Cancela, Historic farmhouse in Colônia Witmarsum, Palmeira, Brazil.
Sede da Fazenda Cancela is a farmhouse combining wood and stone construction with a single floor and usable attic space. The structure spans about 400 square meters (4,300 square feet) and displays the practical building methods of its era.
The farmhouse was built in the first half of the 1900s and initially belonged to Senator Roberto Glaser. It later became central to the Witmarsum Mennonite settlement and marked a shift from private ownership to community importance.
The building served as a maternity hospital where many members of the local Mennonite community were born, making it a deeply personal landmark. Its role shaped how residents remember their origins and family histories within the settlement.
The structure sits in the administrative center of Colônia Witmarsum, accessible via a state road connected to highways BR 277 and BR 376. Its central location makes it easy to find and well-integrated with local infrastructure.
A Historical Museum was established inside the farmhouse in 1989, displaying furniture, photographs, and tools from both Witmarsum and Santa Catarina colonies. The collection preserves the material history of these Mennonite communities and their origins.
