Buraco do Padre, Cave formation in Ponta Grossa, Brazil
Buraco do Padre is a cave formation in Ponta Grossa with a large vertical opening and an underground waterfall inside. Water flows through layers of sandstone that create a dramatic natural shaft as you enter.
The cave formed over millions of years through natural water erosion in the sandstone layers beneath Ponta Grossa. Continuous flow gradually carved out the hollow shaft and the waterfall you see today.
Local artists contribute to the preservation of the surrounding area by creating murals and participating in environmental education programs.
The site is reached by a walking path, and entering the cave involves some climbing over rocks. Wear sturdy shoes since the surfaces can be slippery, especially near the waterfall.
The Fenda da Freira is a side tunnel that extends 300 meters through walls covered with moss and algae. Walking through reveals the different rock layers and patterns stacked over geological time.
