Serra Verde Express, Tourist train journey through Serra do Mar mountains in Paraná, Brazil.
Serra Verde Express is a railway service that connects Curitiba to Morretes over roughly 110 kilometers through Atlantic Forest, crossing 13 tunnels and 30 bridges during the journey. The route follows a historic railway line through mountainous terrain, descending significantly toward the coastal region.
The railway line was built between 1880 and 1885 to create an important transportation connection between Curitiba and the coastal port of Paranaguá. This construction was a significant engineering achievement for its era, enabling trade between the highlands and the coast.
The train ends in Morretes, where you can taste Barreado, a traditional meat stew cooked in clay pots that has been part of local life for generations. This dish reflects how people in the region have preserved their culinary traditions over time.
The standard journey takes about four hours with morning departures from Curitiba station. Seats on the left side offer better views of the mountains as the train descends.
The train travels through Marumbi State Park, dropping roughly 1,000 meters down steep slopes during its journey. Passengers can see both mountains and the Atlantic Ocean from the same ride.
