Couto Cave

Couto Cave is a limestone cave within Alto Ribeira State Park in São Paulo, extending approximately 600 meters through underground passages. The cave contains a natural waterway that connects to the larger Betari River system, carving through rock formations over time.

The cave lies within a park established in 1958 to protect the geological formations of this limestone region. This designation brought legal safeguards to more than 350 caves scattered throughout the area.

Local guides from traditional communities share their knowledge of cave systems while leading specialized tours through the underground passages.

Entry requires advance permission and guided tours led by certified guides who oversee safety measures throughout the visit. Visitors should be prepared for damp conditions, uneven terrain, and narrow passages that characterize the underground environment.

The cave ceiling features sections with low-hanging mineral formations that create light-reflecting water droplets throughout the passages.
