Botucatu is a municipality in São Paulo state in Brazil, sitting on a plateau about 224 kilometers northwest of São Paulo city. The area is defined by its elevated position and is shaped by both farming lands and urban zones.
The settlement gained town status in 1855 and became an independent municipality in 1876, after developing from a transit point between coast and inland. Growth was driven by coffee farming and later by cattle ranching and educational institutions.
The name comes from the Tupi language and means „good winds
The city can be reached from São Paulo via the Marechal Rondon highway, with the drive taking about three hours. Visitors find accommodations and restaurants in the center, while the university sits on the outskirts.
The municipal council declared war on Great Britain twice, though no actual combat resulted from these decisions. These unusual resolutions remained symbolic gestures without military consequences.
