Embu das Artes, Tourist resort in São Paulo metropolitan region, Brazil.
Embu das Artes is a municipality in the São Paulo metropolitan region, located about 19 miles (30 kilometers) west of the capital. The town attracts visitors with its craft shops, studios, and small galleries clustered around the historic center.
The settlement began in the 17th century as a Jesuit mission and slowly evolved into a place where artisans displayed their work. In the 1960s, artists and craftspeople started settling permanently, shaping the town into what it is today.
The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary houses the Jesuit Sacred Art Museum, displaying a collection of religious paintings, woodcarvings, and sculptures.
The central square and surrounding streets are easy to explore on foot, as the main points sit close together. On weekends, markets and demonstrations take place in the center, bringing extra activity to the lanes.
Many workshops open their doors and show visitors how ceramics, wood sculptures, and textiles are made. Some craftspeople have lived and worked in the same buildings for decades, creating a close link to tradition.
