Estrada de manutenção da Ecovias, Maintenance road in São Bernardo do Campo and São Vicente, Brazil
The Ecovias maintenance road runs parallel to the Imigrantes and Anchieta highways while passing through the Serra do Mar State Park. It was built to support the operation and upkeep of these major transportation corridors.
The route follows ancient paths that Portuguese explorers used in the 16th century as part of the Peabiru network to travel between the coast and the plateau. The modern road developed centuries later as transportation infrastructure expanded.
The road forms part of the Márcia Prado Cycle Tourism Route, connecting neighborhoods from São Paulo to Santos for cycling enthusiasts.
Visitors should arrange access in advance with park management, especially if planning to use the route by bicycle. The dry season offers better conditions since wet weather makes the paths more difficult to navigate.
At one point along the route, a window tunnel creates an opening to one of the main tunnels of the Imigrantes Highway. This architectural feature is unusual and shows how the maintenance infrastructure was integrated with the main traffic system.
