Boiçucanga, Coastal beach in São Sebastião, Brazil
Boiçucanga is a beach in São Sebastião that extends about 1.5 kilometers along the coast, bordered by densely forested mountains of the Atlantic Forest. The shore features light sand and palm trees that line the waterfront, creating a tropical coastal setting.
The area was originally a small fishing village but transformed into a coastal destination during the 1970s when roads connected São Sebastião to larger cities. This infrastructure improvement allowed the region to attract visitors and shift its economy beyond fishing alone.
The name comes from a Tupi word referring to a palm species that once grew along these shores. Today, the beach shapes daily life for residents who gather here and influence the local food culture through their connection to the sea.
Rua Nova Boiçucanga serves as the main street with shops, restaurants, and services that make it easy to find what you need. The area is fairly accessible and offers enough infrastructure for a comfortable day trip or longer stay.
From April to November, a migration route of humpback whales passes near the coast as these marine mammals travel to their breeding grounds. Visitors arriving during this season may spot these large animals from the beach or from boats.
