São Roque, Wine production region in São Paulo, Brazil
São Roque is a municipality in São Paulo state, Brazil, located about 60 kilometers (37 miles) west of the capital, at 771 meters (2,530 feet) elevation in the Sorocabana range. The region spreads over rolling terrain with vineyards, orchards, and green valleys, crossed by small roads connecting rural wineries.
Italian and Portuguese immigrants established vineyards during the 19th century, founding a winemaking tradition that continues today. The municipality later developed into a regional center for wine production and agriculture.
The name comes from Saint Roch, a patron saint against plague, honored by Portuguese settlers. Today the town is known for its connection to wine culture, visible in the many cellars along rural roads.
The Roteiro do Vinho route connects ten traditional wineries across the rural area, where visitors find tastings and local products throughout the year. Most wineries lie along well-marked country roads, easy to reach by car.
The Ski Mountain Park offers the largest artificial ski slope in Latin America, where winter sports meet subtropical climate. The Cherry Blossom Festival in July presents regional Japanese food, exhibitions, and performances under flowering cherry trees.
