Andraus Building, Modernist skyscraper in República district, São Paulo, Brazil.
Andraus Building is a modernist skyscraper with 32 floors of concrete and glass construction rising 115 meters (377 ft) above Avenida São João in the República district. The structure displays the clean lines and geometric forms typical of 1960s Brazilian modernism.
Completed in 1962 by architect Majer Botkowski, the building marked a milestone in São Paulo's expanding skyline. A major fire in 1972 prompted Brazil to fundamentally reform its high-rise safety codes and building regulations.
The building represents São Paulo's rapid urban growth in the 1960s when the city became a major South American commercial hub. Walking through the República district today, you can still sense the architectural ambition of that era.
The building now houses offices for municipal and federal government departments with multiple entrances and security checkpoints. Visitors should expect security procedures and may need authorization to enter certain areas.
During the 1972 fire, survivors escaped by reaching the roof instead of using conventional emergency stairs. This discovery led to a complete rethinking of evacuation protocols for high-rise buildings across Brazil.
