Itaquaquecetuba sits in São Paulo state and spreads across roughly 82 square kilometers at an elevation of about 790 meters. The city has around 375,000 residents and belongs to the metropolitan region of the state capital.
Jesuit missionaries founded a chapel near the Tietê River between 1560 and 1563 and created a settlement site. This early mission formed the origin of the present-day city.
The name comes from the Tupi language spoken by indigenous peoples and refers to a place where sharp bamboo plants grew. These plants once covered much of the area before the city developed.
Several highways connect the city to larger centers in the metropolitan area and make travel easier. Three train stations run by CPTM offer further connections to surrounding areas.
The city ranks among the ten Brazilian cities with the greatest progress in reducing social inequality. It also reaches the second highest gross domestic product in its regional administrative unit.
