Praia de Ponta Negra

Praia de Ponta Negra is a sandy beach along Paraty's coast with soft golden sand, framed by steep mountains and dense Atlantic Forest vegetation. The beach curves along a sheltered bay where several small islands sit offshore.

The beach sits near colonial Paraty, which became a major trading port in the 16th century for moving gold to Rio de Janeiro along an important overland route. This historical connection to commerce continues to shape the region's character.

The Caiçara fishing communities living nearby maintain their traditional way of life through artisanal methods and small boats that shape daily activity along this coast. The local people use the beach and bay as the center of their economic and social activities.

The beach is reached by hiking trails from Paraty or by boat from the main harbor, with limited facilities on site. Bring water and supplies, as there are few shops or restaurants nearby.

During low tide, natural swimming pools form between the offshore islands, allowing swimmers to enjoy sheltered waters. This tidal phenomenon creates temporary bathing areas that change throughout the day.
