Ilhas Tijucas is an island group off Barra da Tijuca with three main formations named Alfavaca, Pontuda, and Meio. The islands consist of rocky outcrops covered in shrubs and grass vegetation.
In April 1949, the merchant ship Magdalena ran aground on a reef near the islands. The crew was evacuated safely before the vessel broke apart.
The islands host cormorants that live and fish in these waters, becoming part of the natural character of the place. These birds are visible in the daily landscape of rocks and sea.
Reaching the islands requires boat transportation from Joatinga Channel at the end of Barra da Tijuca beach. Guided tours are available for visitors interested in exploring.
The waters surrounding the islands, especially near Pontuda, teem with marine life including yellow gorgonians, moray eels, and scallops. This makes the location remarkable for observing sea creatures up close.
