Pedra Bonita, Mountain summit in Tijuca National Park, Brazil
Pedra Bonita is a granite peak located within Tijuca National Park that rises roughly 700 meters above sea level and offers views across Rio de Janeiro. The summit provides perspectives of the surrounding mountains, city neighborhoods, and the Atlantic coastline.
The summit served as an observation point for early Rio settlers during colonial times. In the 20th century, it became increasingly popular as a hiking destination after the national park was established.
The summit attracts Rio residents who enjoy spending time outdoors and testing their fitness on mountain trails. Local climbers have developed their own routes and meeting spots over the years.
Proper hiking shoes are necessary because the trail has rocky sections and can be slippery when wet. Starting early in the morning gives you cooler conditions and better visibility for the views and the descent.
The peak functions as a launching point for paragliders and hang gliders who take off daily toward São Conrado beach. On clear days you can watch dozens of flyers departing from the summit and circling out over the city.
