Praia de Fora is the small strip of land between the Cara de Cão and Pão de Açúcar hills, on the grounds of the Fortaleza de São João in Urca. It was the landing and founding site of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro on 1 March 1565. At that time the hills formed an island, the Ilha da Trindade, separated from the mainland.

The first chapel of taipa and sapê stood here, and the founder, dead in 1567, was buried in it until 1583, when his body was moved to Morro do Castelo. The first houses and churches of the city occupied this area, later given over to the defence of Guanabara Bay.
