Fortaleza de São João, Military fort in Urca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The fortress consists of thick stone walls, watchtowers, and defensive structures positioned strategically at the entrance of Guanabara Bay.
Portuguese settlers established the fort in 1565 under Estácio de Sá to defend against French invasions and protect the newly founded city.
The fort maintains elements of Portuguese colonial military architecture and serves as a testimony to Brazil's defense systems during colonial times.
Visitors can access guided tours of the fortress on weekends through prior scheduling, with sessions starting at 9:00 and 13:30.
The fort houses a cell where Tiradentes was imprisoned and contains a foundation mark that forms a Maltese cross when viewed from above.
