Tamandaré da Laje Fort, Military fortress on Ilha da Laje, Brazil
The fort stands at the entrance of Guanabara Bay, directly facing Sugar Loaf Mountain, with walls measuring 4 meters in thickness.
Construction of the fortress began in 1644 under Portuguese rule and reached completion during the Marquis of Lavradio government between 1769 and 1790.
The fortress walls incorporate whale oil in their construction, representing traditional Brazilian colonial building techniques from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Access to the fortress requires boat transportation from mainland Rio de Janeiro, with visits depending on weather conditions and sea levels.
During strong ocean swells, waves completely submerge the island where the fortress stands, making it temporarily invisible from the shore.
