Confeitaria Colombo, Historical confectionery store in Centro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Confeitaria Colombo is a traditional pastry shop and heritage building in Centro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Belgian mirrors set in jacaranda wood frames adorn both floors while Italian marble tables and French stained glass skylights define the interior space.
Joaquim Borges de Meireles and Manuel José Lebrão, both from Portugal, opened the shop on September 17, 1894 in the downtown district. A renovation from 1912 to 1918 transformed the interior with Art Nouveau elements crafted in wood by artisan Antonio Borsoi.
The name honors Christopher Columbus and reflects the Belle Époque era when European influences shaped Rio de Janeiro society. Locals gather here over traditional coffee and pastries while the wood paneling and furniture create an atmosphere reminiscent of a European salon.
The establishment serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, and afternoon tea from Monday to Friday between 9 AM and 8 PM, with weekend hours ending at 5 PM. Both floors offer ample seating though queues form at the entrance during peak hours.
Queen Elizabeth II, King Albert I of Belgium, and Brazilian presidents Getúlio Vargas and Juscelino Kubitschek dined here. The tables and chairs date from the original furnishings and bear traces of over a century of use.
