This 1800-meter avenue stretches through downtown Rio de Janeiro with 33 meters in width, connecting the port area to the Gloria district.
In 1904, the construction required demolishing 641 houses and relocating 3,900 residents under Mayor Pereira Passos's urban renewal program.
The avenue features Portuguese mosaic sidewalks, central garden beds, and buildings designed by European and Brazilian architects in monumental eclectic style.
The boulevard serves over 500,000 daily pedestrians and includes VLT light rail transit, making it a central transportation route in Rio de Janeiro.
In 2016, a 600-meter section transformed into Boulevard Luiz Severiano Ribeiro with 35 trees, green spaces, bicycle racks, and 70 benches.
