Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras, Military academy in Resende, Brazil.
The Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras is a military academy in Resende, Brazil, where future army officers begin their careers. The complex includes barrack courtyards, classroom buildings, sports facilities, and sprawling training grounds that spread across wooded slopes and open plains.
The institution was founded in 1944 and traces its roots to the Royal Academy of Artillery, Fortification and Design created in 1792 under Portuguese colonial rule. After Brazilian independence, the focus gradually shifted toward training national officer candidates.
The academy takes its name from the nearby Agulhas Negras mountain range, whose rocky peaks shape the region's skyline. Officer candidates here follow a highly structured daily routine with parades, formal drills, and communal rituals designed to build esprit de corps.
Anyone applying for admission first takes an entrance exam at the Army Cadet Preparatory School in Campinas. The campus itself is open to visitors only by prior arrangement and authorization, as it is an active military training site.
The layout of the site forms the crest of the Brazilian Army when seen from above, an unusual architectural gesture. The entire grounds operate as a boarding school during the week, with cadets having very limited free exit times.
