Museu da Inconfidência, Historical museum in Tiradentes Square, Ouro Preto, Brazil.
The Museu da Inconfidência is a historical museum located in a former jail at Praça Tiradentes in Ouro Preto. Constructed between 1785 and 1855, the structure displays late Baroque design with solid stone walls and high interior halls.
The institution opened in 1938 to preserve the story of the movement for independence from Portuguese control. Before that, the building served as a local government seat and jail for political prisoners.
The name refers to the Minas Gerais conspiracy against Portuguese rule in the late 18th century. Visitors today can see religious art, colonial furniture, and personal belongings of those involved, all of which make the daily life of that period more tangible.
The collection can also be viewed online through a platform developed with Projeto Tainacan. On site, the rooms are accessed by stone staircases and corridors that keep the character of the old building.
A pantheon inside holds the mortal remains of several people who took part in the conspiracy. Among the exhibits are also a nativity sculpture by Aleijadinho and the painting Morte do Justo in a hall dedicated to religious brotherhoods.
