Church of Our Lady of Mercy and Forgiveness

The Church of Our Lady of Mercy and Forgiveness is a colonial building in Ouro Preto featuring a distinctive central tower from the 19th century. Inside, a main altar holds the original statue of Our Lady of Mercy.

A brotherhood founded the building between 1740 and 1754 after using another chapel as a temporary location. In the 19th century, it underwent complete reconstruction with new stone walls and the distinctive central tower.

The building displays sculptures by Aleijadinho, a celebrated Brazilian artist, including statues of Saint Peter Nolasco and Saint Raymond Nonnatus. These works shape the interior and represent the artistic skill of the colonial period.

The building maintains regular visiting hours and stands next to a cemetery established in 1828. Visitors can explore both locations during their visit to understand the religious history of the area.
