Saint Joseph Church

Saint Joseph Church is a house of worship in downtown Belo Horizonte featuring Neo-Gothic architecture with three naves and polygonal apses in the transept. The structure displays elaborate architectural details that make it a recognizable landmark in the city center.

Construction started in 1902 when Dutch Redemptorist missionaries answered an invitation from Bishop Silvério Gomes Pimenta of Mariana Diocese. This mission work resulted in the establishment of a major place of worship in the expanding city.

German artist Wilhelm Schumacher created the interior paintings between 1911 and 1912, including eight scenes depicting Saint Joseph's life in the central nave.

From the opposite Acaiaca Building, the structure appears to rest on a triangular chalice formed by external stairs and surrounding streets. This distinctive perspective reveals how the building interacts with the urban layout around it.
