The stadium opened in June 1950 and hosted a World Cup match between the United States and England. Between 2010 and 2012, the entire structure was rebuilt to meet modern requirements.
América FC plays its home matches here and brings supporters from across the city and state together on match days. The crowd fills the stands with red and white colors and sings throughout the game with great energy.
The stadium sits in a residential area and can be reached from several access roads. On match days, surrounding streets fill up, so arriving well before the game begins helps avoid delays.
The third tier of seating, added in the 2010-2012 rebuild, rises 27 metres at a 45-degree angle. Metal mesh guard rails had to be installed there after the public ministry found blind spots in every public seat; the architect Leon Myssior said the original project proposed protective bars or laminated glass instead.
