Betim, Industrial center in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Betim is an industrial city in Minas Gerais, Brazil, forming part of the Belo Horizonte metropolitan area and spreading across gentle hills and broad valleys. The cityscape shifts between large factory grounds, housing blocks, and smaller green areas that line the banks of the Betim river.
The municipality emerged in December 1938 from a rural settlement that lived mainly from farming and small craft workshops. The founding of the Fiat factory in 1976 brought thousands of new residents and changed the structure of the town completely.
The name comes from the river that runs through the area, shaping early settlements before the town took form. Workers from different regions brought their own ways of living, building neighborhoods that still show traces of their diverse origins.
Several wide roads lead here from Belo Horizonte, and the drive takes between 30 and 60 minutes depending on traffic. Visitors find gas stations, supermarkets, and smaller restaurants along the main routes, making it a convenient stop on the way to other areas.
The Fiat site produces not only cars but also many engine parts that get exported to other South American countries. Nearby stands a refinery that processes locally sourced oil into different products.
