Quilombo dos Luízes, Quilombo community in Grajaú district, Belo Horizonte, Brazil
Quilombo dos Luízes is a settlement in the Grajaú district and home to around 80 residents living in approximately 30 houses. This community sits on its own land and serves as a living testimony to Afro-Brazilian life within the city.
The community started in 1895 when founders Maria Luiza and Vitalino settled here during the construction of Belo Horizonte. What began as a small settlement grew into a stable community that has remained in place ever since.
The community celebrates its roots through regular gatherings and activities that keep African Brazilian traditions alive. Visitors can experience how generations of descendants preserve and share their customs within this urban neighborhood.
