The Zoological Garden of Belo Horizonte extends across a large area featuring enclosures that replicate natural habitats for over one thousand animals.
The zoological facility opened its doors in 1959 under municipal management and has since evolved into a major conservation center in South America.
The garden incorporates a Japanese garden established in 2008 to commemorate 100 years of Japanese immigration to Brazil.
The Zoo-Botanical Foundation of Belo Horizonte manages the facility, with 80 percent of funding from municipal sources and remainder from ticket sales.
The garden houses Brazil's largest freshwater thematic aquarium, specifically dedicated to showcasing life in the São Francisco River Basin.
