Yacht Tennis Club, Yacht club and UNESCO World Heritage Site in Pampulha, Brazil
The Yacht Tennis Club is a yacht club building featuring curved architectural elements and flowing lines designed by Oscar Niemeyer along the shore of Lake Pampulha. The ground level serves as storage for water vessels, while upper areas contain tennis courts and social spaces for members.
Mayor Juscelino Kubitschek commissioned Oscar Niemeyer in the early 1940s to design this building as part of a regional development project for the Pampulha area. The project formed part of a broader architectural initiative to modernize the lakeside district.
The building's upper level features the Portinari Room with murals by artist Candido Portinari, while Roberto Burle Marx designed the gardens that surround it. These artistic elements shape how visitors experience the space today.
Access is provided through designated entrances for different areas, with the facility situated along the lake shore. Wear comfortable walking shoes as you explore the grounds, which include varied terrain and outdoor spaces.
The structure gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2016, leading to removals of later additions to preserve the original design intent. This restoration process shows how modern preservation standards shape what visitors see today.
