Instituto Nacional da Mata Atlântica, Research institute and biological reserve in Santa Teresa, Brazil.
The Instituto Nacional da Mata Atlântica is a research facility with an attached nature reserve and museum in Santa Teresa dedicated to the Atlantic Forest. The complex includes laboratories, exhibitions, and forest areas where scientists study the plants and animals of this region.
The institution was created in 2014 from the Museu de Biologia Professor Mello Leitão, which naturalist Augusto Ruschi had built. Through this reorganization, an extensive collection of scientific resources was formally established as a federal research facility.
The museum displays collections from the Atlantic Forest and documents the biodiversity of this region. Visitors can explore exhibitions that show how local nature functions and what creatures live here.
The location on Avenida José Ruschi is easy to reach and offers access for different visitors. Plan several hours to explore the exhibitions and walk through the forest trails.
Citizen scientists have collaborated with researchers here and discovered rare species previously unknown to science. This work has shown that the forests of the region still hold many surprises for discovery.
