Guarapari, Coastal municipality in Espírito Santo, Brazil
Guarapari is a coastal municipality in Espírito Santo state on the Brazilian Atlantic coast with more than fifty sandy beaches. The beaches alternate between long open sections and smaller coves framed by rocky outcrops and green hills.
Jesuits built a small chapel in 1585, marking the first permanent settlement point along this stretch of coast. In the 20th century, the town grew through construction of the coastal highway into a key regional center for tourism and fishing.
The name combines indigenous words for a regional bird and a traditional trap made of woven branches. Today, fishers along the coast still shape these constructions, which stand between the rocks at low tide and enclose fish in shallow bays.
The town lies about an hour south of Vitória along the coastal road, reachable by regular bus connections or private vehicles. Plan time for beach changes, as the coast is long and each section has its own atmosphere.
The sand contains monazite, a mineral that emits weak natural radiation and shows measurable values in some areas. Visitors occasionally notice dark patches in the sand that mark these mineral-rich deposits and glint faintly in sunlight.
