Jucu River, River in Vila Velha, Brazil.
The Jucu is a river in Espírito Santo that flows from inland areas toward the Atlantic coast at Vila Velha, passing through flat terrain and multiple communities along its course. The estuary is marked by extensive mangrove forests that form the transition zone between freshwater and ocean salt water.
The river was an important resource for the Tupi people long before Portuguese contact reached the region. During colonial times, the area became a fishing and farming hub that supported the growth of nearby settlements.
The name comes from the Tupi language, meaning "water of the snake tree," reflecting the indigenous heritage of the region. You can see fishers at work along the banks, timing their activities with the tides and seasonal patterns.
The river is accessible from several points in Vila Velha, with the best visiting time during the drier months when water levels are lower and paths remain easy to walk. The area is easiest to explore starting from the coastal town, where restaurants and local services are located.
The protected area at the river mouth is known for its population of bottlenose dolphins that frequently inhabit the shallow waters. These dolphins are known locally as friendly and curious animals that sometimes swim near boats.
