Pinacoteca do Estado do Amazonas

The Pinacoteca do Estado do Amazonas is an art museum and picture gallery housed within the Provincial Palace in Manaus, with two exhibition rooms displaying around 270 artworks. The collection includes paintings, engravings, drawings, digital prints, and sculptures from different periods and artists.

The gallery was established in 1965 under the direction of Moacir Couto de Andrade, who created workshops focused on drawing, painting, and woodcut techniques. This early emphasis on hands-on artistic practice shaped the institution's mission as a teaching center for creative skills.

The collection showcases works by local artists from the Clube da Madrugada movement alongside renowned Brazilian creators like Roberto Burle Marx and Alfredo Volpi. These pieces reflect how artists shaped the region's creative identity and what subjects mattered most to them.

The visit works best when you allow time to see both exhibition rooms and wear comfortable shoes for walking around. The palace entrance is accessible for most visitors, and the galleries are well-lit with straightforward layouts to navigate.

The museum houses a portrait of Portuguese Emperor D. Pedro II painted by French artist Vienot et Morisset, representing a rare connection between European and Brazilian art history. This work stands out because it captures a historical Brazilian leader through a European artistic lens, offering an uncommon perspective on cross-cultural influence.
