The Pinacoteca do Estado do Amazonas is one of five museums in the Palacete Provincial on Praça Heliodoro Balbi in central Manaus. It was created in 1965 and initially occupied a hall in the right wing of the Amazonas Public Library on Rua Barroso, with a starting collection of 90 works.
The gallery was established in 1965 under the direction of Moacir Couto de Andrade, who created workshops focused on drawing, painting, and woodcut techniques. This early emphasis on hands-on artistic practice shaped the institution's mission as a teaching center for creative skills.
The gallery's name and origin trace to the Clube da Madrugada, a group of painters and writers founded in Manaus in the 1950s who organized the Salões Madrugada and art fairs. Moacir de Andrade, its first director, had proposed a permanent space for regional art since the early 1950s; governor Artur César Ferreira Reis created the Pinacoteca by Law No. 233 on 18 July 1965.
