Provincial Palace

Provincial Palace is a three-story building with colonial architecture on Heliodoro Balbi Square that houses five different museums within its restored rooms. The collections include numismatic objects, historical documents, and specialized exhibition areas to explore.

The building was constructed in 1874 as a governmental residence and later served as military police headquarters for over a century. Its transformation into a museum center after 2005 preserved the historic structure for public access.

The building displays artworks and objects from the Amazon region across its various exhibition spaces. Visitors can find archaeological artifacts, photographs, and military equipment that tell stories about regional history and traditions.

The building is centrally located on the square and easily reached on foot, with clear pathways between the different exhibition areas. Visitors should allow adequate time to fully explore all five museums throughout the complex.

The basement of the building preserves original prison cells from when it functioned as military police headquarters, offering visitors a direct look at a lesser-known aspect of the region's past. These spaces reveal the building's dual role in both administrative and enforcement functions.
