Catedral Metropolitana de Manaus

The Catedral Metropolitana de Manaus is a neoclassical church building in the city center with a symmetrical two-story facade and imposing wooden doors. It features six bells cast at a Portuguese foundry and displays decorative elements throughout its interior spaces.

Construction began in 1858 under architect Sebastiao Jose Basilio Pyrrho, marking a major religious expansion in the growing city. The building replaced an earlier chapel that had served the community since the late 1600s.

The cathedral serves as the principal religious center for the archdiocese, hosting traditional processions and celebrations that mark the rhythm of the city's calendar. Visitors can witness how the space functions as a gathering place for important moments in the local faith community.

The building sits in Praca XV de Novembro in the city center and welcomes visitors daily throughout the year. Plan visits around the regular Portuguese-language mass schedule to avoid disrupting services.

Three limestone altars were imported directly from Lisbon and placed inside the building as central focal points. Decorative tiles sourced from nearby Parintins add regional character to the ornamental scheme.
