Almenara, Municipality in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Almenara is a municipality in Minas Gerais situated along the Jequitinhonha River. The town sits at an elevation of 258 meters and serves as the central hub for the surrounding region with banking and medical facilities.
The area began in 1811 when Lieutenant Julião Fernandes Leão established military posts to stop smuggling along the lower Jequitinhonha River. These early fortifications shaped the town's strategic position that continues today.
The name Almenara comes from Arabic, meaning lighthouse or watchtower, reflecting the area's historical role in monitoring river trade. This connection to the past remains visible in how the town sits along the Jequitinhonha River today.
The town has four banks and two private hospitals with a total of 180 beds for visitors and residents. It is easy to access and works well as a base for visiting the neighboring towns of Bandeira and Jacinto.
The region is home to the Mata Escura Biological Reserve, which protects remnants of the Atlantic Forest. This large nature reserve is an important refuge for plant and animal species found nowhere else.
