The Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading extends across three floors with wooden shelves containing 400,000 volumes behind glass-protected cases and metal railings.
The institution originated in 1822 when 43 Portuguese immigrants created a space to preserve literary heritage following Brazil's declaration of independence from Portugal.
The collection includes rare manuscripts, early editions of Portuguese literature, and a notable copy of Os Lusíadas printed in 1572.
The library opens its reading room to visitors without requiring Portuguese language skills and maintains regular hours during weekdays for research purposes.
The building incorporates limestone imported from Lisbon and features statues of Portuguese explorers Pedro Álvares Cabral and Vasco da Gama at its entrance.
