Edifício Sulacap, Art Deco office building in Salvador, Brazil.
Edifício Sulacap is a seven-story Art Deco building located at the intersection of Avenida Sete de Setembro and Rua Carlos Gomes, overlooking Castro Alves Square. The structure houses approximately 120 retail shops and smaller commercial spaces across multiple levels, making it a vibrant hub for commerce.
Architects Anton Floderer and Robert Prentice designed this building in 1946 during a period of urban modernization in Salvador. In 2008, the State Culture Council recognized its historical value and initiated preservation measures.
The building served as a meeting place for musicians during carnival season and attracted renowned artists like Gilberto Gil. Visitors can still sense the energy created by the diverse shops and stores that animate the ground level and lower floors today.
The building is centrally located in Salvador with good accessibility and direct access to the nearby Castro Alves Square. The many shops across different levels require time to explore, so it is worth planning several hours for a visit.
The building was originally conceived as a modern office building but evolved over time into a retail center with diverse shops. This transformation shows how the space adapted to the changing economic needs of the city.
