Igreja do Santíssimo Sacramento e Sant'Ana

Igreja do Santíssimo Sacramento e Sant'Ana is a Baroque church in Nazaré featuring a single nave flanked by side corridors with tribunes above them. A dome with skylights crowns the interior and provides natural light throughout the building.

Construction started in 1747 under Felipe de Oliveira Mendes after receiving royal approval from Portugal in 1746. This religious building represented the ongoing Portuguese influence in Salvador during the colonial period.

This church holds the remains of Maria Quitéria, a national heroine, and Father Roma, who was involved in the independence movement of Pernambuco. Their presence here makes this place meaningful to people who honor these figures from Brazilian history.

The church is located in Nazaré and is open to visitors, with administrative offices nearby on Rua do Carro. Visiting during daylight hours allows you to experience the natural light that streams through the dome and skylights.

This church features a rare architectural element in Bahia: a transept crowned with a domed skylight that fills the interior with natural light. Few churches in the region showcase this particular design choice.
