Description
The former medical faculty building is a neoclassical structure with three stories, symmetrical arched windows, and decorative columns. The facade features a central entrance facing Terreiro de Jesus square and now serves as the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.
History
The building was constructed in 1905 and replaced the Jesuit College that previously stood on this site. It housed Brazil's first medical school, which was established in 1808 when the Portuguese Crown arrived in Brazil.
Culture
The building houses a Memorial of Brazilian Medicine with documents and instruments that show how medical education developed over time. Visitors can see how teaching methods and medical knowledge changed through different periods.
