The institute, established in 1931 under Ignácio Tosta Filho leadership, emerged during Bahia's economic transition from sugar to cocoa production in the early 20th century.
The building, designed by architect Alexander Buddeüs, represents the architectural merger of Art Deco and Bauhaus styles in Brazilian institutional construction.
The building houses government offices, a Bradesco bank branch, and a public restaurant, located on Avenida da França in Salvador's Commercial district.
The structure incorporated advanced technology for its time, including underground conveyor belts for cocoa transport and building cooling systems.
