The Plano Inclinado do Pilar connects the Comercio neighborhood to the Pelourinho district through a cable-operated transport system on steep terrain.
Built in 1895 and operational since 1897, this funicular utilized an existing crane before receiving electrical upgrades from Otis company in 1912.
The funicular provides access between Santo Antonio and Comercio districts, where travelers can observe traditional architecture and local customs.
Operating Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM, the funicular system can transport up to 600 passengers daily between different elevation levels.
The funicular track maintains an exceptional 83 percent grade, requiring specially designed cars manufactured by Brill company of Philadelphia.
