Cine Teatro Jandaia, Historic movie theater in Baixa dos Sapateiros, Salvador, Brazil.
The Cine Teatro Jandaia is a three-story Art Deco building in Baixa dos Sapateiros featuring symmetrical lines and a reinforced concrete structure. The interior was designed with specialized lighting throughout the viewing space, which is distributed across multiple levels of the building.
The theater opened in 1910 as a silent film venue with approximately 400 seats and underwent major renovations in 1931. This modernization significantly increased its capacity and helped establish it as a major entertainment destination in the region.
The theater served as a gathering place for Salvador's residents and played a central role in the city's evening entertainment scene. People from different walks of life came together to watch films and experience performances by local and visiting artists.
The building was taken over by the State of Bahia in 2014 and is maintained in a condition that allows for visits. Keep in mind that the venue no longer operates as a cinema but serves as a historical landmark for exploration.
The cinema featured a special section called 'geral' that offered low-cost tickets, making entertainment accessible to people from poorer backgrounds. This area reflected the city's social structure and made the venue a truly communal gathering space.
