Exu

Exu is a municipality in the Sertão region of Pernambuco state, located on elevated terrain in a semi-arid area. The town centers on agriculture and livestock farming as its main economic activities.

Exu was founded in 1885, establishing the first formal administrative structure in this part of northeastern Brazil. This founding enabled the organized development of agricultural settlement across the region.

A commemorative bust honors Luiz Gonzaga, the folk musician who brought northeastern Brazilian music to national audiences. The monument reflects how deeply this place connects to the forró tradition that still shapes the region's identity today.

The town sits roughly 600 km inland from the coastal city of Recife and is best reached by car. A small hospital provides basic medical care for the local population.

The climate here sits at the boundary between tropical and arid conditions, maintaining average temperatures around 25°C. This transitional climate shapes how locals farm and adapt their daily lives to the local environment.
