Alcântara

Alcântara is a municipality in Maranhão with narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses with courtyards, and numerous churches built during the colonial period. The architecture still reflects Portuguese settlement heritage, and many buildings retain their original character.

French settlers founded the settlement in the 16th century, but the Portuguese quickly took control to support their efforts to retake São Luís from rival powers. Control of this location proved crucial to the balance of power in the region.

The people here keep Afro-Brazilian traditions alive through music and dance, especially during the Feast of the Holy Spirit when Tambor de Crioula performances fill the streets. These customs reflect the roots of the community and shape how residents celebrate together.

Visitors reach the place by regular ferry services from São Luís, a journey of about one hour. The best time to explore is early morning or at sunset, when it is cooler and the light shows off the old buildings beautifully.

The Brazilian Space Agency operates a launch facility here, making this place a key location for space exploration in South America. The mix of colonial heritage and modern rocket technology creates an unusual contrast in the region.
